I am a Camera: Selfies as Beard Porn

self big coat collar up inf

I’ve let my beard grow wild this winter. I’m aiming for a look something like a cross between Darwin and John Brown, with a dash of John Berryman. Old Testament not Miracle on 34th. Mrs. Dr. Omed has noted that I’ve been fondling, pulling, stroking and tugging, and generally having my way with it. Friends of all sexes have confirmed my vanity in my excess hirsuteness by admiring these and other recent selfies posted to Facebook. Simply by increasing the length of my facial hair, I have increased enjoyment. I do not expect such joy.

I haven’t yet joined Beard Game Matters, however.

falls o wish it was this cold

It’s January. I wish it was this cold. When I took these pictures, late in January 2014, it was about 9 degrees at the Falls of the Ohio. Tonight, the temperature is in the low 5os F, and it’s raining. I’ve been missing the snow we haven’t been having so far this season, I’ve reserved four books on snowflakes at the library. I’m not kidding. The weather boys predict snow tomorrow, but I don’t believe them. Meanwhile, the winter monsoon continues.

Always Merry and Bright. Always Bliss.

merry you bliss

I look lovely in that tea cozy, don’t you think? Henry Miller had a motto:

Always Merry and Bright!

To that I will graft a old-testamenty bit*, and a bit of my own:

Always merry and bright, you stars in deep darkness, stars sewing my foot to the black river. I am looking up at you even when I can’t see you. I may be blind, but I got my eye on you.

Rub this blessing all over yourselves and call me in the morning.

I am a Camera: Sunday Selfie

proto selfie 1980ish twk

I took this proto-selfie with a 35mm Pentax K1000 single lens reflex camera circa 1982ish. I found this photo and others dating back to the 1980s tucked in a box of postcards a few day ago; I’ve been saving this photo for Selfie Sunday.

The Pentax was a good camera. I’m sorry to say I lost it to a Denver pawn shop circa 1989. The blurriness is due to the photographer; no autofocus. I picked up the camera and snapped the photo on impulse. Shot in available light. Even back then I disliked using the flash. The camera was probably loaded with 400ASA film.

The compelling thing about this self-portrait is I remember taking it; I was in the depths of severe unmedicated depression. This is the face of flat black Grendel, mad, bad, and sad, without chemicals.

Did my slow parkour on the 400+my0 Devonian rocks at the Falls of the Ohio this fine, cold, clear morning. Herakleitos said, “You cannot step into the same river twice, for other waters are flowing into you.” The Ohio River at the Falls is never the same twice, and I go down to let its other waters flow into me.

Get out in the sun while you can. The Excitable Boy Weatherman in Louisville forecasts the weather for the next few days as overcast and drear.
