Thought Balloon: The Earth Has Days

thought balloon small asterisk

*The Earth doesn’t care what day it is.

The Earth has rotated on its axis upwards of 1.7 trillion, that is to say, one thousand seven hundred billion, times. This is what James Hutton called deep time. Homo sap. has been around roughly 73 million of those days. Today Yesterday is was the 47th “Earth Day.” Happy Earth Day, y’all.

Yes, I know I’m a day late in posting this, but I don’t care what day it is, either. Except that it’s Shakespeare’s (alleged) birthday. Solon would have called Will happy, I think. Happy Shakespeare! That can be said on any day as far as I’m concerned. I could be thrice more happy if I could write a sonnet half as great as Shakespeare’s 119:

What potions have I drunk of Siren tears,
Distilled from limbecks foul as hell within,
Applying fears to hopes, and hopes to fears,
Still losing when I saw myself to win!
What wretched errors hath my heart committed,
Whilst it hath thought itself so blessed never!
How have mine eyes out of their spheres been fitted,
In the distraction of this madding fever!
O benefit of ill! now I find true
That better is by evil still made better;
And ruined love, when it is built anew,
Grows fairer than at first, more strong, far greater.
So I return rebuked to my content,
And gain by ill thrice more than I have spent.

With appropriate hubris, so long lives this, Shakespeare lives in deep time.
