Best Farm, Monocacy National Battlefield, south of Frederick, Maryland
A photo a day keeps the Doctor in play.
This farm field is part of the field of the battle which caused Confederate General Jubal Early to be late. Though the Union force under Lew Wallace was forced to retreat, the fight delayed Early’s force a full day on his way to attack Washington D.C. Since Early was late, Union reinforcements arrived at Washington before he did, and the Confederate attack on Washington failed.
Approximately 3000 men on both sides were killed or wounded in this battle, which took place on July 9, 1864.
