A Poem Today for a Coffee Tomorrow, McQuixote

This poet is a machine for turning coffee into metaphor. This poet needs black coffee, black as my heart. This poet needs a table, a chair, a cup and saucer, the smell of espresso and shelves of books. So,

Y’all go to Kickstarter and help Jeff, Mickey, and Trevor buy an espresso machine so I can have my coffee.

Scissor Dance: Wake Up and Smell the…

CAFÉ NOIR

Drink strong black coffee
until you can see the spider
in the cup.

Take small sips from the demitasse;
taste burnt sugar,
bitter almonds,
rose petals,
cardamom,
clove,
the attar of earth and blood.

Close your eyes.
Another sip.
Another.
Hold it.

Hold the spider
in your mouth.
He will dance

and prick the tongue
with the tang
of this muddy milt
brewed
from that first handful of dirt
banging
on your coffin lid.

The bittersweet tincture
of this rare earth
is the stuff that dreams are made on.
You will bring forth monsters
Beautiful monsters.

The taste is on your tongue.
You are in the black.

Any pilgrim and seeker who donates to the McQuixote Kickstarter will receive a print of the above scissor dance, Wake Up and Smell the But wait, there’s more! Any pilgrim and seeker who heeds my bleg and grants an especially generous donative to the McQuixote Kickstarter will in turn be granted Absolute and Perpetual Indulgence…
